Taking Down Evelyn Tate by Poppy Nwosu
Lottie is a metal head with poor impulse control sharing a room/family with her mortal enemy, Evelyn Tait. She crushes on Sebastian, spars with her TV Trope daggy-understanding school principal, collects words that often express complicated feelings (hiraeth!) as she goes about working out her own complicated feelings about her best friend, Grace, boy-next-door Jude and her relatively new family arrangement. I loved the slow widening of Lottie’s perspective (and world) and the descriptions of seaside/industrial town, and the tomato plants, and the set piece at the Medieval fair. Sharp, sweet, sonder.
